How to Get to Poovar Island: From Trivandrum, Kochi, or Anywhere Else
A practical, up-to-date guide to reaching Poovar Island, Kerala. Airports, train stations, taxi fares, driving routes, and the tips that save you time and money on arrival.
Getting to Poovar Island is straightforward if you know the right route, and confusing if you don’t. Most first-time visitors arrive at Trivandrum airport with no clear plan for the last 30 kilometers, get overcharged by a taxi driver, and start their trip on a sour note. This article exists so you can skip that experience.
I’ve sent dozens of friends and relatives to Poovar over the years and helped them figure out the logistics every time. Here’s everything you actually need to know — airports, trains, taxi fares, the specific catches to avoid, and my honest recommendation for each starting point.
The short answer
- Fly into Trivandrum (TRV) — the closest airport, ~30 km / 45–75 minutes to Poovar
- Book a pre-paid taxi at the airport counter (₹1,200–₹1,500) OR use your resort’s airport transfer service (₹1,000–₹2,000 pre-booked)
- Arrive in daylight if possible — the rural roads and boat jetty are much easier to navigate during the day
- Allow for traffic — Trivandrum traffic can add 30+ minutes during rush hour
That’s the summary. Below is the detail for the five most common starting points.
From Trivandrum International Airport (TRV)
This is the recommended arrival route for almost all visitors. Trivandrum airport (code: TRV, full name: Trivandrum International Airport) is ~30 km north of Poovar Island.
Your options, ranked
1. Resort airport transfer (recommended for first-timers)
Cost: ₹1,000–₹2,000 per way Comfort: Comfortable AC car, pre-arranged driver, no negotiation Time: 45–75 minutes
When you book your resort, ask them to arrange airport pickup. They’ll send a driver who’ll meet you at the arrival gate with a sign showing your name. The driver knows exactly where the resort is, knows the boat jetty routine, and takes care of everything. For a first-time Poovar visitor, this is the least stressful way to arrive.
Request specifically: AC car, confirmed pickup time, driver’s phone number sent to you 24 hours before your flight.
2. Pre-paid taxi at the airport
Cost: ₹1,200–₹1,500 Comfort: Good, regulated Time: 45–75 minutes
Trivandrum airport has pre-paid taxi counters in the arrival area. You pay the fixed fare at the counter, get a receipt, walk outside, show the receipt to a dispatcher, and get assigned a taxi. The fare is fixed — no negotiation, no meter games.
This is the safest “pay at arrival” option. The drivers are licensed, the fares are set, and there’s an accountability system. Slightly more expensive than an app taxi but worth it if you don’t want hassle.
3. Uber / Ola (app taxi)
Cost: ₹800–₹1,200 Comfort: Variable Time: 45–75 minutes (plus pickup wait)
Uber and Ola both operate from Trivandrum airport. The fares are cheaper than pre-paid taxis, but there are two catches:
- Airport pickup zone. App taxis have to pick up from a specific zone, which isn’t always clearly marked. Expect to walk 5–10 minutes from arrival to pickup.
- Driver cancellations. Some drivers cancel when they see the destination is far from the airport. You may need to book 2–3 times before one accepts.
My honest take: If you’re comfortable with app taxis and have patience for possible cancellations, Uber/Ola saves you ₹300–₹700. For many travelers, that’s worth the hassle. For stressed-out jet-lagged first-timers, pay the extra and take the pre-paid.
4. Private driver (pre-arranged via WhatsApp)
Cost: ₹1,000–₹1,500 Comfort: Excellent Time: 45–75 minutes
Some local drivers in Trivandrum take bookings via WhatsApp directly. If you know someone who can recommend a specific driver, this works well — you get a vetted driver at a fair fare. I don’t want to publicly list individual drivers here because contact info changes, but if you ask at your resort or through local contacts, you can usually find a reliable option.
Don’t: Accept offers from drivers who approach you at the airport. Pre-paid counter or pre-arranged only.
From Kochi / Ernakulam
Kochi (also spelled Cochin) is the most common tourist arrival airport for Kerala trips. Kochi International Airport (COK) is in Nedumbassery, about 220 km north of Poovar.
Your options
1. Domestic flight to Trivandrum
Cost: ₹2,500–₹6,000 Time: 50 minutes flight + transfer time Recommended for: Visitors short on time
IndiGo, Air India, and other domestic carriers fly Kochi to Trivandrum in under an hour. Flight frequency is good (multiple daily). Once in Trivandrum, follow the “From Trivandrum International Airport” instructions above.
Total travel time: ~3–4 hours including connections.
2. Train from Ernakulam to Trivandrum
Cost: ₹200–₹1,500 depending on class Time: 4–5 hours Recommended for: Scenic coastline, budget travelers
Indian Railways runs multiple daily trains between Ernakulam Junction and Trivandrum Central. The ride follows the Kerala coastline and is one of the more scenic train journeys in India. Tickets can be booked on IRCTC or through third-party services.
- Sleeper class (SL): Cheap but basic. ₹200–₹400.
- 3AC / 2AC: Air-conditioned coaches with bedding. ₹800–₹1,500.
- Chair car: Day trains only. ₹400–₹900.
From Trivandrum Central, take a taxi or app ride to Poovar (₹900–₹1,300).
Total travel time: ~5.5–7 hours.
3. Private car / taxi from Kochi to Poovar
Cost: ₹5,000–₹8,000 Time: 5–6 hours
You can hire a taxi in Kochi for the whole Poovar trip. It’s expensive but gives you flexibility to stop along the way (for example, at Kollam backwaters or Alleppey for a half-day). Only worth it if you’re incorporating stops along the route.
Not recommended for a direct journey — the flight is faster and the train is cheaper.
From Kovalam
Kovalam is the closest major tourist destination to Poovar — only 18 km away.
- Tuk-tuk (auto-rickshaw): ₹400–₹600, 35–45 minutes
- Taxi: ₹700–₹1,000, 30–40 minutes
Both are easy. If you’re combining Kovalam and Poovar on the same trip, you can stay in Kovalam for a few nights, then move to Poovar for the quieter half of your trip. The transfer is effortless.
From Varkala
Varkala is about 60 km north of Poovar.
- Taxi: ₹1,500–₹2,500, 90 minutes
- Train: Take a local train to Trivandrum Central (~45 min), then taxi to Poovar (~45 min). Total: 2–2.5 hours.
Taxi is more convenient; train is cheaper.
From Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, or Delhi
For domestic Indian travelers from major metros:
Fly to Trivandrum (TRV)
Best option. Direct flights from all four cities. Flight time 1.5–3 hours depending on origin. From the airport, follow the Trivandrum instructions above.
Fly to Kochi (COK)
Sometimes cheaper than Trivandrum flights, but adds 4–6 hours of ground travel. Only worth it if the flight price difference is significant (usually ₹2,000+).
Train
Long-distance trains to Trivandrum Central run from most major Indian cities. Travel times are 20–40 hours depending on origin. Only practical for budget travelers with time and a taste for the journey.
Common mistakes to avoid
1. Accepting unsolicited taxi offers at the airport
Drivers who approach you inside the airport or at the exit are not always licensed. Stick to the pre-paid taxi counter or pre-arranged resort transfer.
2. Underestimating travel time
Google Maps shows a ~45-minute drive from TRV to Poovar. Plan for 60–75 minutes. Traffic in Trivandrum, especially during the evening rush, easily adds 20–30 minutes. Arrive at the airport with enough buffer for a slower-than-expected transfer.
3. Arriving at night without a pre-arranged transfer
Poovar’s resort access involves a boat transfer from the mainland to the island. At night, this can be confusing for first-timers, and some resort boat services have limited evening hours. If your flight lands late, confirm with your resort in advance that they can handle a late arrival.
4. Confusing Poovar with Kovalam
Several hotels and booking platforms describe themselves as “near Poovar” when they’re actually in Kovalam or on the mainland 5–10 km from the island. Before booking, verify the exact location and check whether boat transfer is included.
5. Flying to Kochi when Trivandrum has direct flights
Kochi is farther (220 km vs 30 km), so unless the flight price difference is substantial, book into Trivandrum directly.
Practical tips for the transfer
- Get a local SIM at the airport before leaving. Jio and Airtel have kiosks in the arrival area. This makes rideshare apps and resort contact much easier.
- Download maps offline before your flight. Google Maps works but having offline backup is smart for rural routes.
- Keep small denominations for the taxi tip (₹100–₹200) and any incidental costs along the way.
- Write your resort’s name and phone number on paper in addition to your phone. Battery failure at the end of a long flight is inconvenient.
- Don’t stress the boat transfer. Every resort handles this smoothly. You just walk to the jetty, get on the boat with your luggage, and they drive you to the resort dock. Takes 5–10 minutes.
Bottom line
For 90% of visitors, the best arrival route is: fly to Trivandrum (TRV) → pre-paid taxi or resort transfer → 60 minutes → Poovar. Total cost ₹1,000–₹2,000, total time 60–75 minutes from landing to your resort’s check-in desk.
Everything else — flights to Kochi, train journeys, combining with Kovalam — is either a scenic bonus or an unnecessary complication. Keep it simple on the way in, and worry about side trips once you’re settled.
